Every laptop, phone, printer, server and smart device connected to an organisation becomes part of its network. Reliable connectivity depends on several components performing different jobs.
The main building blocks
Switches connect local devices
A switch links devices within the same local network. It learns which device is connected to each port and forwards data towards the intended destination rather than sending everything everywhere.
Routers connect different networks
A router moves traffic between networks—for example, between an office network and the internet. It uses IP addresses and routing information to choose an appropriate path.
Wireless access points provide radio connectivity
An access point connects wireless devices to the wired network. Professional Wi-Fi requires careful positioning, channel planning, security and capacity management; a strong signal alone does not guarantee a good service.
Addressing and essential services
Devices need IP addresses to communicate. DHCP can issue these settings automatically, while DNS translates familiar names into IP addresses. If either service fails, users may report that “the internet is down” even when the underlying connection still works.
Security is part of the design
Firewalls inspect and control traffic. Segmentation separates users, servers, guests and sensitive systems. Updates, secure configurations, monitoring and access control reduce the chance that one compromised device affects the whole organisation.
What makes a network effective?

- Resilience for services that cannot tolerate interruption.
- Monitoring that identifies faults before they become widespread.
- Clear ownership of changes, backups and incident response.
A well-designed network is largely invisible to its users. It allows people to work securely and consistently, while giving technical teams the visibility needed to maintain and improve it.
